Albert F. Albee, WWII and Korean War veteran
Aug. 14, 1926 – Aug. 24, 2015

Albert F. Albee, of the Town of Tonawanda, a World War II and Korean War Navy veteran who fashioned a post-military career in service on the border, died Monday in North Gate Manor, North Tonawanda. He was 89.

Born in Ashley, Pa., Mr. Albee moved to Buffalo in the 1940s and served as a radio operator and cryptographer on a ship attached to a destroyer escort that patrolled Europe, Africa and the Middle East during World War II. His ship was credited with the capture of a German U-boat.

After receiving his honorable discharge at the age of 19, Mr. Albee returned to Buffalo and earned an equivalency diploma, then diplomas for radio technician and frequency modulation from the American Radio Institute. Mr. Albee was recalled to the Navy during the Korean War and saw service in the Pacific Ocean. In 1956, he enlisted in the Air Force Reserve, serving until 1959.

Mr. Albee also worked for the U.S. Postal Service a few years before joining the border services. From 1960 to 1985, he served with the Border Patrol and the Immigration and Naturalization Service as a radio operator and inspector, respectively. Mr. Albee received professional commendations for his role in processing Cuban immigrants during the Mariel boatlift in 1980, when he was dispatched to Indiantown Gap, Pa., and Miami.

His wife of 56 years, the former Dolores J. Gerland, died in 2005.

Survivors include three sons, Donald E., Larry M. and Robert D.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
