Sept. 5, 1934 – Aug. 11, 2015

Frank K. Zimmerman, an Army veteran and career communications systems specialist, died Tuesday of lymphoma in his Williamsville home. He was 80.

A lifetime resident of the Buffalo area, Mr. Zimmerman graduated from Burgard High School and served in the Army from 1957-59, based at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Mr. Zimmerman retired from Executone of Buffalo, installing phones and nurse-call systems before becoming a salesman in 1983. In 1984, he started his own business Buff-Comm Communications, which installed communication systems in area hospitals, schools and churches. Mr. Zimmerman dissolved the company a few years ago.

A car buff, he rebuilt a few cars over the years and in his late teens, raced his Jaguar at Watkins Glen.

Mr. Zimmerman also enjoyed fishing and for 30 years, he and his wife, the former Bonnie L. Lock, would enjoy weekend trips in their trailer to meet friends and to fish on Lake Ontario. In 1977, Mr. Zimmerman and his family took a cross-country road trip in their trailer.

He also coached his sons' hockey and soccer teams in Amherst.

He was a 20-year member of the Amherst Central Lions Club, twice serving as president of the organization.

Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter, Deborah Sunshine; two sons, David and Darren; a sister, Charlotte Rockey; a brother, Paul; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service was held Saturday in Faith United Church of Christ, 1300 Maple Road, Amherst.
