Dr. Paul H. Potter, Western New York gynecologist and obstetrician

Jan. 23, 1933 – March 13, 2017

Dr. Paul Himmelsbach Potter, 84, an obstetrician and gynecologist, died unexpectedly Monday in Buffalo General Medical Center.

He was a Buffalo native, and graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover.

Dr. Potter also attended Princeton University and McGill University Faculty of Medicine.

He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, starting in 1965. As part of his military service, he was commander of a hospital located near Saigon, and chief surgeon there.

After his time in the service, Dr. Potter worked as a doctor in Western New York.

He had a practice with his brother until 1992, when his brother retired. Dr. Potter had a practice for some years after that point on his own.

At the University at Buffalo, in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, he worked as a clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

Besides his residence in the Buffalo area, Dr. Potter also spent time as a resident in Maine, on Cliff Island.

He enjoyed sailing, and had a boat called the "Banshee" with some family members.

Among his sailing travels were trips in the Caribbean and across the Atlantic Ocean, as well as in Maine.

In his career, Dr. Potter, as a doctor, became one of three men in his family -- brothers -- who became gynecologists and obstetricians in their medical practices.

He was a member of the Buffalo Tennis and Squash Club.

He belonged to Westminster Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his brother Ben, survivors include a sister, Molly Potter Scheu, and nieces and nephews. Services will be private.
