Sept. 12, 1924 - Nov. 26, 2017

Teresa J. Rapp, a retired teacher, died Sunday in Absolut at Aurora Park, East Aurora, where she had lived for the past seven years. She was 93.

Born in Southampton, Long Island, the former Teresa Jones was the first person in her family to be born in a hospital instead of at home and the first in her family to graduate from college.

On the day in 1946 that she graduated from Albany State Teachers College with a bachelor’s degree in teaching mathematics, she was married to Harry W. Rapp. They moved to the Buffalo area in 1947 and had lived in Marilla since the 1950s.

Mrs. Rapp was a full-time math teacher at Williamsville High School, then was a substitute teacher in various schools while she was raising her two children.

She continued working part-time until she was 84. For 30 years, she was an income tax preparer for East Aurora attorney John B. Elliott. For more than 20 years, she had a second part-time job as a substitute mail carrier on routes in Marilla and Elma.

Active in Annunciation Catholic Church in Elma, she served in all of the offices of the Ladies Sodality, including president.

For most of her life, she kept a large garden. She made applesauce and pickles, canned many vegetables and squeezed grape juice.

Her husband, manager of manufacturing for the motor division at the Westinghouse plant in Cheektowaga, died in 2007.

Survivors include a daughter, Valerie; a son, James; a sister, Agnes Economos; a brother, Tom Jones; and three step-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 in Annunciation Church, 8540 Clinton St., Elma.
