History of Delaware Funeral Home

The history of the Delaware Funeral Home of Amigone Funeral Home, Inc. 1132 Delaware Avenue began in 1811. Since then the property has been owned by many prominent Buffalo families such as the Wadsworth’s, Wayland’s, Worthington’s, Andrews’ and the Adam’s.

The mansion was rebuilt several times beginning in the 1830’s. Through careful research, we have restored the mansion to its original state when it was owned by the Wayland family in 1870. Newspapers found between the walls date back to the late 1800’s. The building was originally heated by individual coal fireplaces found in almost every room and illuminated by fixtures fed through gas pipes.

Our expansion of the Adam’s Mansion, built in the 1800’s strives to maintain the integrity of the era. This was accomplished on the exterior by matching the mansion’s brick, windows, woodwork and architecture.

Inside the mansion the restoration uncovered exceptional birds eye maple woodwork in the large conference room that had been painted over for at least 100 years. Fireplace mantels date back to the 1870’s. The funeral home was finished to preserve the period by using oak wainscoting. To give a glimpse of an era past, antique furniture of the late 1800’s lines the corridors of the funeral home. The third floor with its beautiful hardwood floors was primarily used for entertaining and dancing, and has been restored to its original condition.

The carriage house has been remodeled and will now house a dentist office. The mansion will house a library, conference rooms, offices and a residence. The addition will house a grand foyer, a large Funeral Home and visiting rooms. It is with great pride that the Amigone family has been able to restore this piece of history, contribute to the revitalization of the City of Buffalo and to fulfill my father’s dream.
