Barbara L. Newman of Jupiter FL and Clarence, NY passed away on February 5, 2019 at the age of 81 after a lengthy illness.

The daughter of an army officer, Barbara was born in Los Angeles in 1938, but lived in various cities across the United States as well as in Germany where she attended high school and in Puerto Rico.

It was the army that brought Barbara together with Donald F. Newman her husband of 58 years. Mr. and Mrs. Newman met at the Watertown Arsenal in Watertown, MA, where her father a West Point graduate and United States Army Colonel, was Don’s commanding officer. They were married in 1957 at the historic Old North Church in Boston, MA. Mrs. Newman’s parents are interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

Donald F. Newman passed away in 2015. He and his brother Reginald B. Newman II took their father’s coal delivery company and built it into NOCO Energy, the largest fuels distribution company in Western New York.

While Don was busy building NOCO, Barbara was busy raising four boys - Robert L. (Kimberly) of Jupiter, FL, Thomas B. (Carol) of Stamford, CT, James D. (Victoria) of Buffalo and Michael F. (Marcy) of Buffalo. This earned her the well-deserved moniker as the Newman family matriarch and her patience in raising four boys led to a much appreciated sense of humor.

Never one to allow the men in her home to overshadow her, she often reminded them and especially her husband of the numerous holes in one she had on the golf course. One of her favorite sayings to her husband and sons while on the golf course was “are we playing men’s rules or are we putting out?”

As the boys left home and married and had children, Barbara became a loving grandmother who doted on her grandchildren Joshua, Marcus, Matthew, Gracie, Charlie, Max and Kylie. The grandchildren looked forward to and loved visiting “BB” at her winter home in Jupiter, FL.

Like her husband Donald, Mrs. Newman served on various boards and community organizations. Among her favorites were Artpark, the Buffalo Zoo, the Junior League and the Bristol Home. She also was very active through the years with the annual WNED-TV Auction and with the Boys and Girls Club of the Northtowns.

In addition to her sons and grandchildren, Mrs. Newman is survived by her sisters Susan Lutz (Jack Maser) of Washington, DC and Margaret Lutz of Roosevelt, TX and sister-in-laws Carol Newman (Reginald II) of Buffalo, NY and Katherine Newman Feld (George) of Burlington, NC as well as 4 nieces and one nephew.

Family and friends may gather on Sunday, June 9th at the Country Club of Buffalo, 250 Youngs Rd., Williamsville, where a Celebration of Barbara's Life will be held from 1-5 PM.
