John J. Fromen Sr., 78, attorney who founded Buffalo law firm
July 6, 1939 - May 25, 2018

John J. Fromen Sr., a Buffalo attorney for nearly 50 years, died May 25 in his Orchard Park home after a long illness. He was 78.

Born in Buffalo, he was a 1958 graduate of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, where he was a standout pitcher on the baseball team. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers and attended training camp, but left to pursue his education. St. Joseph’s inducted him, along with the entire 1955-56 baseball team, into its Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

Married and the father of two while attending Canisius College, he worked two jobs and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1962, becoming the first person in the state to graduate from night school in four years, instead of the usual six or seven years. He completed his juris doctor degree at the University at Buffalo Law School in 1966.

He was admitted to the bar in 1967. A trial attorney who worked with many high-profile personal injury cases, he was founder of John J. Fromen Attorneys at Law. He continued to practice until 2014.

He was a member of the Erie County and New York State Bar Associations and the Western New York and New York State Trial Lawyers Associations. He also was a member of the Buffalo Club.

A sailboat racing enthusiast, he was a member of the Youngstown Yacht Club and competed in numerous local, national and international regattas.

Also an avid golfer, he was a member of the Orchard Park Country Club and the Niagara Frontier Country Club.

He was a longtime season ticket holder for the Buffalo Bills, the Buffalo Sabres, the Studio Arena Theatre and Shea’s Performing Arts Center.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, the former Ann Mertzlufft; three daughters, Deborah, Mary Beth Osier and Kathleen Priebke; three sons, John J. Jr., Michael T. O’Connor, and Peter J.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Amigone Funeral Home, 1132 Delaware Ave.
