Services will be held Saturday, December 13, for Josephine Cirrito Sciarrino, a former Niagara Falls school teacher who died Friday, December 5 in Francis House, Syracuse after a lengthy illness. She was 93.
Mrs. Sciarrino, who for the last 12 years resided at The Hearth at Greenpoint in Liverpool, NY, lived until July 2002 in Niagara Falls, NY. She attended Fifth Street Elementary School and South Junior High School, having graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1939. She attended and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Science degree from Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA in 1943 and then continued with graduate studies at Niagara University.

She began her 33 year career as a teacher in 1943 with her first year spent in the Lewiston Public Schools and thereafter teaching in the Niagara Falls Public Schools, first at Gaskill Junior High School and then South Junior High School as a General Science teacher and from 1963 until she retired in 1978 as a Biology teacher at Niagara Falls High School. She was an inspiration and a role model to her students at a time when women were not traditionally involved with the study of Science.
Mrs. Sciarrino was predeceased by her beloved husband of 53 years, Peter J. Sciarrino, Jr., her parents, Charles and Josephine (DiChiara) Cirrito, and her sisters, Carolyne E. Cirrito and Catherine Cirrito Griffiths.

She will be sadly missed by her children and their spouses, Dr. Peter Charles and Teddi-Ann (Felber) Sciarrino and Dr. Mary Jo Sciarrino Nicolais and Dr. Robert A. Nicolais, and her seven grandchildren, Dr. Peter T. (Tyler) Sciarrino, Dr. Joseph Sciarrino, Dr. Sarah Sciarrino, Elizabeth Sciarrino, Robert C. Nicolais, Christina Nicolais and Laura Nicolais.
An avid reader and lifelong learner who was accomplished at trivia, Mrs. Sciarrino also enjoyed tennis, golf, bowling and gardening.

During World War II, she volunteered for the Red Cross as a Gray Lady. She also belonged to the Niagara Falls and New York State Retired Teachers Associations and the AARP.
