Obituary

Michael R. Kimelberg, a business executive and urban planner, died December 20th after an unexpected and brief illness, surrounded by his family. He was 46.

Born in Buffalo, he grew up in the Albany area. He graduated from Bethlehem Central High School, where he was a star member of the varsity cross country and track teams.

After high school, Michael attended SUNY Geneseo, where he received a B.A. in political science. He then attended the University of Washington in Seattle, where he received a Masters of Urban Planning with a focus on Urban Design. He stayed in Seattle for many years where he worked as an Urban Planner for the City of Seattle and later as a Senior Urban Designer for LMN Architects.

Michael returned to Buffalo in 2010 to work as the Chief Planning Officer for the Seneca Nation, of which he was an enrolled member. He later served as the Chief Operating Officer for the Seneca Nation, where he was an exceptional executive and diplomat. He was universally liked and respected within the Seneca Nation, and helped implement many large-scale projects and initiatives.

Following his work for the Seneca Nation government, Michael served as the Senior Vice President for Corporate Development with the Seneca Gaming Corporation. In this role, Michael led numerous high-profile development projects and business ventures involving the Gaming Corporation and its partners. As with the Seneca Nation, he was regarded as a consummate professional and friend, with a unique ability to bridge different interests and outlooks. He was well known as a kind, gentle and smart person who was highly effective at whatever he did.

Michael was committed to the Buffalo area and its community. He served as a member of the Boards of Directors of the Buffalo Zoo and the Niagara Falls Medical Center.

Michael was an avid cyclist, runner and cross-country skier. He loved exploring the outdoors.

He was also an accomplished artist with a focus on water color paintings.

Michael was devoted to his daughter, Lucy, and was an integral part of her life. He was very involved in all of her academic, athletic and other pursuits. He introduced her to a wide variety of places, people and interests, and nurtured her enthusiasm for life.

In addition to Lucy, survivors include his former wife, Randilyn; his brother, David (Shelley); his father, Harold (Maggie); and his niece, Sophie. He is pre-deceased by his mother, Pamela Ahrens. He was dearly loved by his family and friends.

Loving father of Lucy A. Kimelberg; dear former husband of Randilyn Kimelberg; dear son of Harold K. (Maggie) Kimelberg and the late Pamela C. Ahrens; dear brother of David (Shelley) Kimelberg; dear uncle of Sophie Kimelberg. The family will be present on Friday (January 11, 2019) from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at the (Delaware Chapel) AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, INC. 1132 Delaware Ave. (at W. Ferry St.) where a Funeral Service will be held Saturday (January 12, 2019) at 10:00 AM. Interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. A reception celebrating Michael's life will held at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, 1300 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, NY, following the Funeral Services. Michael R. Kimelberg, a business executive and urban planner, died unexpectedly Thursday in Buffalo General Medical Center following a brief illness. He was 46.

Born in Buffalo, he grew up in the Albany area and graduated from Bethlehem Central High School, where he was a star member of the varsity cross country and track teams.

He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from SUNY Geneseo and a master's degree in urban planning with a focus on urban design from the University of Washington in Seattle. He worked as an urban planner for the City of Seattle and later as a senior urban designer for LMN Architects.

Mr. Kimelberg returned to Buffalo in 2010 to work as the chief planning officer for the Seneca Nation, where he was an enrolled member. He later served as the chief operating officer for the Seneca Nation. He also was senior vice president for corporate development with the Seneca Gaming Corp., where he led a number of high-profile development projects and business ventures.

He was a member of the board of directors of the Buffalo Zoo and Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Lucy; his former wife, Randilyn; his father, Harold, and a brother, David.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 12 in Amigone Funeral Home, 1132 Delaware Ave.
