Buffalo News Obituary

. 13, 1929 - Oct. 26, 2017

Richard D. Badger, a retired research chemist and marathon runner, died Thursday in his North Tonawanda home. He was 88.

Born in Canandaigua, the oldest of seven children, Mr. Badger graduated from Canandaigua High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Canisius College.

He worked as a research chemist for Occidental Chemical Co. on Grand Island, retiring in the early 1990s, and was a member of the American Chemical Society.

In retirement, Mr. Badger taught chemistry at Niagara County Community College and Canisius College, and was a substitute teacher in Buffalo schools.

A fitness enthusiast, he swam competitively in his youth and was an avid bicyclist and marathon runner. He took part in more than 30 races, many with his brothers, and ran in two Boston Marathons. While he was working, his daughter Rebecca said, he routinely bicycled from his home in North Tonawanda to his office on Grand Island and went running during his lunch hour.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Marlene A. Graf, a retired teacher; four daughters, Rachel, Lisa Addesa, Gretchen and Rebecca; a sister, Maureen Oberlies; three brothers, Alan, Frank and Martin; and six grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph University Catholic Church, 3269 Main St.
