SISTER MARIE (Elizabeth Ann) McTARNAGHAN, OSF
March 9, 2019 age 86, beloved daughter of the late Robert Leroy and Anna Adaline (nee Murphy) McTarnaghan; sister of Leroy (Beverly) and Donald (Patricia) McTarnaghan. Also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will be present to receive friends Thursday from 2-8 PM at St. Mary of the Angels Convent, 201 Reist Street Williamsville where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 AM. Sister Marie McTarnaghan, baptized Elizabeth Ann, was born May 8, 1932 in Warsaw, New York. Her home parish was St. Mary’s, Geneseo, NY. She attended school from kindergarten through college at Geneseo Central. Her father Roy owned a car agency and her mother, Adaline, dedicated her time to the family including Elizabeth and her two brothers, Roy and Don. During her college years, Elizabeth spent summers working in the Department of Recreational Therapy at what later became Craig Development Center in the neighboring town of Sonyea, NY.
After college Elizabeth taught for 4 years in the Iroquois Center School District and also completed work on a Masters Degree in Education at Canisius College of Buffalo.
On September 8, 1958, Elizabeth entered the Sisters of St. Francis and took the name of Sister Marie. Sister Marie professed her final vows on July 1, 1964. Following entrance, Sister Marie served as a teacher and principal in the following schools: SS Peter & Paul, Williamsville; St. Gregory the Great, Amherst; St. Mary’s Elementary, Lancaster; Queen of Heaven, West Seneca; SS Peter & Paul, Hamburg and Most Holy Redeemer, Cheektowaga.
From 1983-1987, Sr. Marie served as Religious Education Coordinator at St. Mary’s Parish, Geneseo, NY. From 1992-1999, Sister Marie served as principal at St. Aloysius School, Springville, NY where she retired from her almost 40 years in education. Sister Marie also had served the Sisters of St. Francis as the Directress of Novices from 1977-1979. Most recently Sister Marie served in Community Service and Prayer Ministry at St. Mary of the Angels.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Mary of the Angels Chapel, 201 Reist Street, Williamsville, on Friday March 15 at 10:30 AM. Sister Marie is survived by two brothers; Roy and Donald McTarnaghan. Interment will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Williamsville, NY.

Sister Marie McTarnaghan, a teacher and principal in Catholic elementary schools, died Saturday in St. Mary of the Angels Convent in Williamsville. She was 86.

Born in Warsaw, Elizabeth Ann McTarnaghan was one of three children and grew up in Geneseo, where her father owned an auto dealership.

While earning a bachelor’s degree at Geneseo State Teachers College, she spent summers working in recreational therapy at the Craig Developmental Center in Sonyea. She then taught for four years in the Iroquois Central School District and completed a master’s degree in education at Canisius College.

She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1958, took the name of Sister Marie and professed her final vows on July 1, 1964.

Sister Marie served as teacher and principal in elementary schools at SS. Peter and Paul, Williamsville; St. Gregory the Great, Amherst; St. Mary’s, Lancaster; Queen of Heaven, West Seneca; SS. Peter and Paul, Hamburg; and Most Holy Redeemer, Cheektowaga.

She returned to her home parish, St. Mary’s in Geneseo, as religious education coordinator from 1983 to 1987. From 1992 until she retired in 1999, she was principal of St. Aloysius School in Springville.

She also was director of novices for the Sisters of St. Francis from 1977 to 1979 and in recent years performed community service and prayer ministry at St. Mary of the Angels Convent.

Survivors include two brothers, Leroy and Donald.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 15, in St. Mary of the Angels Convent, 201 Reist St., Williamsville.
