Buffalo News Obituary Version
July 14, 1934 - Oct. 2, 2019

Teresa M. “Terry” Carlisle, of the Town of Tonawanda, a retired administrator of court programs for the Erie County Bar Association, died Oct. 2 in Gates Vascular Institute following a surgical procedure. She was 85.

Born in Buffalo, the former Teresa Martoche was a 1952 graduate of Grover Cleveland High School and attended Bryant and Stratton Business Institute.

She began working as a legal secretary with the firm of Saperston, McNaughton and Saperston.

Mrs. Carlisle went on to have a 22-year career with the Erie County Bar Association, serving as assistant administrator of the Pre-Trial Services Agency, then becoming assistant administrator and court coordinator for the Indigent Prisoners’ Program.

Former Erie County Bar Association president Maryann Saccomando Freedman, a childhood friend, remembered Mrs. Carlisle as “very highly respected” by the lawyers and judges in the criminal courts.

In recent years, she assisted her niece, Buffalo City Court Judge Amy C. Martoche, in establishing a fund to benefit students at Buffalo Seminary.

A devout Catholic, she was an active member of St. John the Baptist Church in the Town of Tonawanda, cooking and baking for fundraisers and other events, and participating with her husband in the parish’s senior travel group.

As a young woman, she was a member of Holy Cross Church and a member of its Ladies Sodality.

Her husband of 65 years, Richard D., who owned and operated Richard’s Floor Care, died July 15.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlene D. Hanson; a son, Richard D. Jr.; a brother, retired State Supreme Court Justice Salvatore R. Martoche; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. John the Baptist Church, 1085 Englewood Ave., Town of Tonawanda.
