BALDASSARRE, Elgisa (nee Toscani)
Affectionately remembered by her family as “Noni,” passed peacefully from this world on June 3, 2018 in Schoellkoph Health Center. She lived 96 years and all of her best days were filled with love of her family, her greatest pride and joy. Born on January 1, 1922 in Cesacastina, Italy, Elgisa married Raffaele Baldassarre on March 8, 1943. They were married 56 years at the time of his passing in 1999. Together with her husband and children, Elgisa immigrated to the United States in 1954. They settled in Niagara Falls where she lived until her death. Elgisa was a member of St. Joseph Church and the only thing greater than her love for family was her love of God. She was also a member of the Cristoforo Colombo Ladies’ Society. After re-locating to Niagara Falls, Elgisa worked at Fortuna’s Restaurant, Union Carbide and Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. She retired in 1985 from Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center where she worked as a housekeeper and later returned to the hospital to serve as a volunteer until she was 92 years old. She took great joy in serving her community as a volunteer. One could not enter Elgisa’s house without being fed, so guests knew to arrive hungry. She loved to cook her Italian specialties and seldom left home without homemade pizzelles for sharing. She enjoyed bingo, bowling, crocheting and of course spending time with her family. Elgisa is survived by her four children, Italo (Marlene) Baldassarre and Anita (Tom) Zona of Niagara Falls, Bruno (Karen) Baldassarre of Lewiston and Frank Baldassarre of Las Vegas, NV; thirteen grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roberto and Costantino Toscani of Italy as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Maria and two brothers, Paolo and Giuseppe. Friends may call Wednesday from 4-8 PM at SPALLINO-AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, 1300 Pine Ave., Niagara Falls, where prayers will be offered on Thursday at 11:15 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph Parish at St. Joseph Church, 1413 Pine Avenue at 12 PM. Internment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Please share condolences online at
