McGRATH - Joan C. (nee McDonald)
September 5, 2018, age 85; beloved mother of Donald (Susan), Susan (Geoffrey) Fine, Brian (Kimberly), Robin (Edward) Sofio, and Allison Deckman; loving grandmother of Isabella, Taylor, Michael, Max, Casey, Matthew, Alec, and Brady; dearest sister of Eugene (Kit) McDonald and Mary Ellen (late William) Walke; also survived by many nieces, nephews and cherished in-laws. No prior visitation. Family and friends are invited Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 10 AM to attend a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 4375 Harris Hill Rd. (at Main St.), Williamsville, NY 14221. Interment to be held privately. Flowers gratefully declined. If so desired, memorials may be made in Joan's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, WNY Chapter. Joan C. McGrath, (nee McDonald) 85, passed away September 5.
Joan was born in Elmira NY, raised in Easton PA and moved to Niagara Falls in 1955. Prior to marrying and raising her 5 children, Joan was a stewardess for American Airlines, a part time model, Assistant Buyer for Lord & Taylor, and a teacher. Joan was active in the community. She was President of the Youngstown Civic Guild, Chairman of the Youngstown Civic Guild Antique Show, President and Board Member of the Niagara Council of Mothers Club, Board Member of the Niagara Pioneer Soccer League and a Cub Scout Den Mother. Once her children had grown, she returned to the work force. Joan was Area Manager of Upjohn and worked for Mount St Mary’s Hospital in Niagara Falls.
Joan was the cherished Mother of Donald (Susan), Susan (Geoffrey) Fine, Brian (Kimberly), Robin (Edward) Sofio, and Allison Deckman; loving Grand Mother of Isabella, Taylor, Michael, Max, Casey, Matthew, Alec, and Brady. She is remembered with love by her brother Eugene (Kit) McDonald and her sister Mary Ellen (late William) Walke. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cherished in-laws. She was predeceased by her parents; Edward Carroll McDonald and Helen Marie McDonald (nee O’Hara).
Family and Friends are invited Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 10 AM to attend a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church at 4375 Harris Hill Rd. Williamsville, NY. Interment will be held privately. There will be no prior visitation. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joan’s memory to The Alzheimer’s Association, WNY Chapter.

Joan C. McGrath was a stewardess, a part-time model, an assistant buyer for Lord & Taylor and a Catholic school teacher - all before she married and had five children.

Ms. McGrath died Sept. 5 after a long illness in Amherst. She was 85.

Prior to getting married in 1956, Ms. McGrath was a stewardess for American Airlines and a part-time model. She was an assistant buyer for Lord & Taylor in New York City for a couple of years in the early 1950s, said her daughter, Susan Fine. And she was a Catholic school teacher in Niagara Falls, where she taught second and third grades in the mid-1950s, her daughter said.

After her five children became adults, Ms. McGrath returned to the workforce. She was an area manager for Upjohn in Niagara Falls in the early 1980s. She also did administrative work at Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Niagara Falls.

Born Joan McDonald in Elmira in 1932, she was raised in Easton, Pa., and moved to Niagara Falls in 1955.

Active in the community, Ms. McGrath was president of the Youngstown Civic Guild, chairperson of the Youngstown Civic Guild Antique Show and president and board member of the Niagara Council of Mothers Club.

She was also a board member of the Niagara Pioneer Soccer League and a Cub Scouts den mother.

In addition to her daughter, Ms. McGrath is survived by two other daughters, Robin Sofio and Allison Deckman; two sons, Donald and Brian; one brother, Eugene McDonald; a sister, Mary Ellen Walke; and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 4375 Harris Hill Road, Williamsville.
