October 31, 2019, age 70.
Loving mother of Allan P. Izzo and Andrew W. (Molly Novatt) Izzo; dear sister of Catherine (Lee Trapp) Kenneally, Mary Beth (Paul Bazaar) Martin and Ellen (William) Leaver; also survived by nieces, nephews and her former spouse Dr. Joseph L. Margaret S. “Peggy” Izzo, of North Buffalo, a research nurse practitioner, died Oct. 31 in Erie County Medical Center after a long illness. She was 70.

Born Margaret Sussmann in Jamaica, Queens, she studied to become a registered nurse at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, then earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Georgetown University and a master’s degree in nursing from Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

A Buffalo resident since 1988, Mrs. Izzo worked as a nurse, nurse-clinician and research coordinator.

She was one of the first hemodialysis nurse practitioners and went one to become a faculty member in schools of nursing at the University of Rochester and Trocaire College. She later was a researcher at the Sleep Medicine Centers of Western New York and authored or co-authored several scientific articles.

An avid swimmer and master rower, she later became an accomplished gardener and traveled extensively, visiting six continents.

She was a member of the Garrett Club, the Road Scholars Travel Club and the Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Club.

Survivors include her former husband, Dr. Joseph L. Izzo Jr.; two sons, Allen P. and Andrew W.; and three sisters, Catherine Kenneally, Mary Beth Martin and Ellen Leaver.
